Course Contents
The history of film appreciation imagines itself to be as old as the history of film making. From the very beginning cinema’s inventors, artists, thinkers and lovers had buried themselves with the ontological question that kept changing shape. Is cinema an abstract form of expression or is it about stories? Or is it about how stories are to be told? Is it about recording spaces or storing time? What is cinema’s relationship with other art forms?
All these questions and much more attempt to explain the essence of cinema and further our understanding about humanity and self.
The five days course will create a historical perspective on Cinema explaining it’s many internal movements and aesthetic decisions that intersect with social ideas, politics, ethics and other arts using the five main elements: Narrative, Space, Time, Sound and Colour. These five elements create a grid through which we look at the history of the medium and understand it’s pulls.
A. Narrative Development (Day 1&2)
Early Cinema and the idea of spectacle (Lumiere Brothers/George Melies)-- The formation of cinematic language and it’s early pronouncements in D.W.Griffith--Advent of Studio and Film Making as industry--Experimental Films(Rene Clair/Maya Deren)--Russian Montage: Cinema, Ideology and it’s departure from psychologically motivated characters—Twisted psychologies of German Expression—Post WW2 Narratives: Italian Neo-realism/French New Wave/ Neo-realism & New Waves across the globe/New Hollywood-- Auteurs-- National Cinemas
B. Space In Cinema (Day 3)
Space as spectacle—Anthropomorphic Space—Space denied— Unhindered Space—Autonomous Space—Space as memory
